Before all of this, i’d like to say i am no expert in Psychology or Biology. This is collection of my thoughts
Human beings are biological creatures that exist in the infinite history of universe. We are primitive creatures that have adapted to survive for thousands of years and only recently, we developed this collective known as the civilization. So what I am saying is that humans are no different physically than any other biological creature such as a cat or a ladybug
But we are capable of thought, hate and love. And there’s people that think this is enough to be a person. In simple terms, I agree with this statement. But we are more than that aren’t we? also, are there no other creatures that are also capable of thought, hate and love?
In my interpretation, being a person is a spectrum. To be person, it’s essential to have own thoughts, be capable of loving oneself and loving other people, have the ability to dislike or even hate something and learn to do things and especially learn how to be a better person. We as human creatures are the closest to being a person that we know of and i wouldn’t be surprised if there is some other creature far away in the universe that can be more of a person than we as humans ever will
Now you might be thinking to yourself. Wow this guy is on something. Calling an alien that we don’t even know exist a person? You’ve really lost it this time Shuka.
But to me, as long as you are capable of having these attributes I’ve mentioned. You are a person.
Say right now, gorillas develop intelligence that is on par with what we have as human. And they have integrated into our society and follow our societal rules. You could go outside right now and see a gorilla walking down the street. And see them not as some animal but as a intelligent creature. Wearing clothes and going grocery shopping to make dinner for their family. Going through same hardships as us humans, working alongside us and laughing with us. Crying when they are sad and loving when they feel attracted. Instead of referring to them as monkeys, wouldn’t you refer of them as a person. Sure, maybe not human. Not the same type of species. But to me, they would certainly be a person. Someone I could have conversation with, someone that would feel happy if I complimented their outfit or feel insulted if I told them they look ugly. Someone who would feel empathy for a dying eldery or a helpless child
I would certainly refer to them as a person. Or better yet i might even consider them more of a person than some humans that live among us.
